Fast Fact: Yellow Springs was once believed to have healing powers, and is still the subject of local legend.
- In the 1800s people from across the country came to drink the bubbling, yellow-tinged water of Yellow Springs in what is now the Glen Helen preserve in the town of Yellow Springs. They believed the water contained healing powers that would cure them of their ailments. Spoiler alert: the yellowish color is actually due to rust in the water. Sorry.
- However, to not completely negate the power of the springs, I feel like I should relay the local legend that states something to the effect of if you drink from the springs you will always return. I did not drink, so I cannot verify, but I welcome comments from anyone who has!
FOUR Yellow Springs Things to Do on Your Ohio Trips:
1
Young’s Jersey Dairy is a delightful family farm turned endless family entertainment establishment just 5 minutes from downtown Yellow Springs. Among the many delicious eats and treats it offers, the farm is most famous for its ice cream and cheese curds. Getting to see farm animals up close is the biggest treat though, as you can pet and feed the goats, watch the other farm animals in their pens, and then watch the milking of the cows for a true farm
experience. As if that isn’t enough, Young’s also has miniature golf, batting cages, a driving range, and hosts many special events and activities for all ages! All this is just a short drive from Cincinnati, what a great day trip!

Shopping. Tons of it. Yellow Springs is a mecca of eclectic shops offering almost everything, as long as it isn’t boringly normal. There’s such a collection of unique shops I’m afraid to mention any specific one for fear of leaving someplace exceptionally fun off the list. However, I will say that you can build a fairy garden, browse through extraordinary art pieces, purchase vintage records, and find toys from your childhood and maybe even your grandparent’s childhood. It’s also a
great place to find gifts for those in your life for whom it’s hard to buy because, until Yellow Springs, you thought they had everything.
3
Little Art Theatre. This historic little theatre in the center of town offers a variety of old and new movies in an intimate setting at very reasonable prices. It would be shameful to talk about Yellow Springs and not mention that it’s the perfect location for nature lovers and hikers alike. This small town sets within minutes of John Bryan State Park, Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, and of course, the previously mentioned Glen Helen Nature Preserve. And, of course, Yellow Springs and the park and preserves are only a day trip from Cincinnati!
SIX Things to Know Before You Take That Day Trip from Cincinnati:
- There are plenty of food options in Yellow Springs, from food trucks to restaurants, and from coffee shops to bars. So shop ”til you drop and then eat when you’re beat.
- You’ll also want to consider checking out the Yellow Spring Brewery and Tuck-N-Red’s Spirit & Wine. If your group is undecided on preference between the two, no worries, they sit right next to each other on Walnut Street.
- And for those who like to work up an appetite or thirst before indulging, the Little Miami Bike Trail runs right through town. As a matter of fact, Yellow Springs Brewery’s back patio overlooks the path.
- Yellow Springs also holds a Street Fair twice a year on the second Saturday of June and the second Saturday of October. This fair is hugely popular and features a variety of great entertainment as well as craft and food vendors. If you love a good street fair, you’ll want to add this one to your list of must-dos.
- How is the nightlife in Yellow Springs? I asked that very question and was assured that the town’s nightlife, specifically on the weekends, is exceptional. A couple of people mentioned that on occasion you may run across a drag show or a medium that the local bar has brought in for entertainment. Given the flavor of this town, I’m sure that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
- The parking situation seemed more than adequate for the town. There’s plenty of street parking on the main streets and side streets, and if those spots are full, there are also several lots available. The town is small, so no matter where you park you’re still close to everything.
