Just outside Cullman, Alabama, the Ave Maria Grotto sets on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey. The Grotto is about 52 miles north of Birmingham and very accessible. Fast Fact: The Ave Maria Grotto contains about 125 structures on a hillside that is wrapped by a 2-block walking path.

The structures, almost all of which were constructed by the late Brother Joseph Zoetl of St. Bernard Abbey, are made of concrete, stone, and donated materials such as seashells, old glass, and marbles. 

Biblical towns and buildings and famous landmarks are just some of the scenes that are ready for viewing in this peaceful setting.

THREE Things to Know Before You Go:

  1. The Grotto is outside of the sleepy southern town of Cullman. You’ll find plenty of food options in town as well as hotels if you decide to spend the night.  
  2. The Grotto is not free, you’ll pay a small entrance fee. The good news is that it’s open 7 days a week, just closing on major holidays.  Check the website for updated information.
  3. You don’t have to be Catholic to enjoy the Grotto. The serene surroundings and the eclectic representations are plenty impressive to amuse everyone.
